At the heart of this vision is the full-scale resurrection of a chapter of the New York Central Railroad, powered by what will soon be the only operating New York Central steam locomotive, No. 3001. This is more than just the return of an iconic machine; it’s the rebirth of the entire train. The same engine, the same passenger cars, the same stations, running once more over the very rails that carried them in the 1940s.

THE AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE PROJECT can create one of the nation’s most compelling and thoughtfully curated heritage railway experiences. By preserving and interpreting America’s railroad legacy through authentic, operating historic equipment, the project will enlighten, enrich, and entertain 21st-century audiences while celebrating our shared culture, technological achievement, recreation, and spirit of innovation. In doing so, it is poised to revitalize lineside communities through heritage tourism while offering the public a world-class, immersive, and educational connection to American history and Indiana’s rich transportation heritage.

1 – Restore steam locomotive No. 3001, the largest surviving steam locomotive from the New York Central Railroad.

A sustained and successful fundraising effort is necessary to raise over $4 million dollars to overhaul the 3001. Upon hitting important funding milestones and completing the restoration of the locomotive, 3001 will become the first New York Central steam locomotive to operate in nearly 70 years.

2 – Overhaul the New York Central’s “Great Steel Fleet,” a collection of seven passenger cars that entered service on December 7th, 1941

Acquired in 2022, these stainless steel streamliners are exactly the type of passenger cars that would have been found behind the 3001 when it operated in regular service. A minimum investment of $330,000 each is required to update each car with modern heating, electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, and first-class amenities. When completed, the train set will be capable of carrying hundreds of guests.

3 – Operate an authentic living history attraction that recreates the golden era of rail travel in America.

We’re turning back the clock, but only in the best of ways. When we say “immersive,” here’s what we mean: one day, you’ll be able to visit railroad stations, board passenger trains, and ride behind a steam locomotive all from the same historic railroad: The New York Central. The very same railroad that gave us the “Red Carpet Treatment” and the “World’s Most Famous Train” will now be the driving inspiration for guests as they travel aboard excursions through three states on a curated, entertaining, and educational journey on an experience that can’t be matched anywhere else in North America.

FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE

In the first half of the twentieth century, the NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD became one of America’s defining transportation systems, carrying millions of passengers across the industrial heartland. Citizens, business leaders, factory workers, students, servicemen, and vacationers alike traveled aboard its celebrated fleet of streamlined passenger trains.

The Central’s legendary name trains—including the 20th Century Limited, Empire State Express, Mercury, and many others — came to symbolize the optimism, elegance, and technological confidence of the Art Deco era. More than simply moving passengers from one destination to another, they reflected a commitment to public service, hospitality, innovation, and the belief that travel itself could be an unforgettable experience.

This legacy was forged in Indiana. The New York Central became the state’s most extensive railroad system, connecting communities both large and small while linking Hoosiers to the nation’s great commercial centers. Indiana also served as home to the railroad’s largest locomotive and passenger car shops west of New York State in Beech Grove — a facility that remains an active railroad hub to this day. Its rails fueled economic growth, expanded tourism, carried generations of families, and helped shape the communities they served, leaving a legacy that remains woven into Indiana’s landscape today.

Despite its immense network, influence, and cultural significance, remarkably little remains of the New York Central’s public-facing legacy. While much of its railroad network continues to serve as the backbone of today’s freight rail system, the iconic locomotives, passenger cars, and celebrated trains that once defined the railroad have all but disappeared. Their story now survives primarily in photographs, archival film, and museum collections.

Yet the New York Central represented something greater than steel and steam. It embodied an enduring spirit of public service, connectivity, innovation, and confidence in the future — a belief that transportation could unite communities, strengthen commerce, and elevate the travel experience itself.

It is that spirit—not merely the preservation of historic equipment — that inspires THE AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE PROJECT today.
